Hohe Tauern National Park Region

So much to discover: our region forms part of the largest conservation area in the Alps

Spanning the counties of Carinthia, Eastern Tyrol and Salzburg, the Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest nature conservation area in the Alps. It is also Austria’s oldest National Park, whose origins date back 100 years: first steps  towards creating a conservation area were taken as early as 1939, inspired by America’s Yellowstone National Park (est. in 1872). In 1971, an agreement was reached between Carinthia, Eastern Tyrol and Salzburg – and the Hohe Tauern National Park was born.

Its fascinating landscape has been shaped by ice ages, geological and geomorphic processes. A broad spectrum of climates within the National Park, ranging from oceanic to continental, gives rise to an outstanding biological and ecological diversity.
