Walking & Hiking Trails in Heiligenblut am Grossglockner

The most panoramic hiking trails and outstanding routes in the Hohe Tauern National Park

A step-by-step discovery of the miracles of nature in the largest conservation area of the Alps: the Hohe Tauern National Park and the mountain range that gave it its name, are an El Dorado of walking and hiking trails for any level of ability.

Despite the impressive appearance of the alpine landscape, there are also plenty of more gentle routes. In fact, a hike at a leisurely pace, with plenty of time to take in the views of the surrounding summits, may be one of the best ways to experience the Hohe Tauern mountains.

Lace up your boots

We set out in the early morning hours. The forecast tells us to expect a beautiful, hot summer’s day. For the first leg of our journey, the Grossglockner Cableways take us from the valley further up the mountain. The benefits of this are two-fold: we shave a whole lot of walking off our hiking trip, and once we have reached an altitude of 2000 metres, the summer heat won’t be quite as intense. From the Bergstation (mountain cableway station), we start out on the ‘Geotrail Tauernfenster’ path – leading us through an amazing landscape all the way up to the ‘Hochtor’. How wonderful life can be, if you can enjoy it in the mountains!

From the green alpine pastures to the eternal ice

Aside from the Heiligenblut cableways, it is predominantly the Grossglockner High-Alpine Road that provides convenient and direct access to higher altitudes. In no time at all, the fully paved ‘Dream Road of the Alps’ takes you to the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe – a popular departure point for some of the most breathtaking hiking adventures the Hohe Tauern have to offer. Special highlights include the Gamsgrubenweg trail, or a tour along the Gletscherweg trail down to the Pasterze Glacier – all while the mighty Grossglockner looks on.

Exploring the National Park with a Ranger

Would you like to gain an in-depth experience of the largest conservation area in the Alps? We highly recommend a guided tour with one of our National Park Rangers. Deeply rooted in this wild and natural environment, they will be able to give you fascinating insights and interesting information about the region’s flora and fauna. You may either prefer to hire a ranger for the day, or join an existing National Park Tour of your choice – such as a Wildlife Observation tour, or an excursion on the ‘Geotrail Tauernfenster’ nature trail.
